Why Mutt Matchers & Friends?
Mutt Matchers & Friends was initiated not only for the rescue and permanent adoptions of our four legged friends from death row, but also to provide education to the community to promote responsible dog ownership.. We have, over the past three years and even before we opened, provided information to our dog adopters and the public showing the importance of spay and neuter, keeping vaccinations updated, and also how to manage and improve the behavior of their dogs. We have shown many of them how to improve their own knowledge in order to teach their dogs. This is also what Mutt Matchers is about. Rescuing dogs from death row and adopting them to the best homes is the priority in our non-profit organization, so we consider follow up after the adoptions critical. Some of our adopters have had a problem child now and again and our staff is always available to assist them with behavior issues and help in training their dogs to respond in the correct manner. They need only to ask.
We had a two year on-going program in obedience training, behavior adjustments of both animal and human, and humane discipline, using tools that every human has; voice tones, hand signals, and body language. From that program we have now moved on to giving back more to our Community. Mutt Matchers could not exist without the support, and donations to continue our work in educating the public. Our generous supporters have enabled us to start two different programs. (see POUND PALS and CARE N SHARE)
We at Mutt Matchers are committed to the permanent health and welfare of our dogs we adopt out to our community. We take it "one step beyond" what most rescue places deem necessary prior to adopting dogs to their "forever homes". Our dogs not only are spayed and neutered and vaccinated, we also micro-chip them prior to adoption. Any adopter of one of our dogs, knows that if their dog is lost there is an excellent chance it will be returned to them. Dogs adopted from us prior to micro-chipping began are afforded a discount rate to have it done. We care about the dogs and happy owners usually have happy dogs.
Community out-reach for us means; educating people on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets; keeping in contact with our adopters; advising the public from our office what their options are for their unwanted pets; visiting schools to teach children the proper care and treatment of their pets as well as safety for them and their pets; visiting people in hospices who had to give up their pets; and sharing donated dog and cat food for those in unfortunate circumstances. We believe a temporary helping hand to feed their pets is far better than the pet losing its home. We have several other ideas for expansion of our community outreach programs that we will pursue in the future.
